“It’s much harder to do smart and elegant comedies than dramas”
It starts today the 16th edition of the Monte-Carlo Film Festival of the Comédie, the prestigious film festival conceived and directed by Ezio Greggio, will take place from 4 to 9 March 2019 in the Principality of Monaco.
First Festival in the world dedicated to comedy, this year’s edition sees the participation as jury president of the world-renowned director Emir Kusturica, winner of two Palme d’Or in Cannes and a Golden Lion in Venice; to support him, Sandra Milo, Mathilda May and Edoardo Leo.
“We are very pleased to be able to inaugurate the 16th edition of the Montecarlo Film Festival that this year will feature the best comedies of the international scene” commented Ezio Greggio “In this regard I would like to mention some of the comedies presented in recent years at our festival which have received important awards such as ‘Death of Stalin’ by Armando Iannucci, best European comedy at the European Film Awards, ‘Maktub’ by Oded Raz and ‘Easy’ by Andrea Magnani, nominated for two David di Donatello “.
Many films in competition and out of competition, from all over the world, which will be screened during this edition. Common theme, romantic comedy and love that will be the masters in all films including the world premiere “Le Mystere D’Henri Pick” directed by Rémi Bezançon (released in theatre in France tomorrow) and the international preview “Superlopez” directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera, already winner of the Goya award for the best special effects.
“It’s much more difficult to do smart and intelligent plays than directing a dramatic film,” director Kusturica told the conference by commenting on the main theme of the festival, a genre much loved by the public that is enjoying ever greater success “It’s much harder to make people laugh that make them cry and sometimes you need an absolute genius like Peter Sellers that, for example in his masterpiece, the Pink Panther never hints at a smile but makes you laugh from start to the end “.
Among the events not to be missed there is the Masterclass Comedy Talks: the comedy of yesterday vs. today’s comedy scheduled for Friday, March 8th which will feature some of the best Italian cinematographic works including Carlo Verdone, Paolo Genovese and Salvatore Esposito, and the ‘tribute to Sandra Milo with the screening of the film by Giorgia Wurth, “Salvatrice”. All the protagonists of the festival will be guests of the awards ceremony on Saturday 9 March, to which will be added the actor and director Antonio Albanese and the international guest, Michael Madsen, the cult actor of Quentin Tarantino.
The event takes place under the High Patronage of S.A.S. Prince Albert II de Monaco and the Italian Embassy and is organized in collaboration with EFG Private Bank.
