CINEMA: AT MONTECARLO ‘KING OF PEKING’, HOW TO BECOME DVD PIRATES IN CHINA SUBMITTED THE FILM IN COMPETITION AT FESTIVAL OF THE COMEDY OF GREGGIO
Be a passionate fan of Hollywood films in a small Chinese village, become a rich pirate video trafficker but choose not to lose the trust of your child. It is the amusing and touching “King of Peking”, an Australian film set in China presented today in competition at the 15th edition of the Montecarlo Film Festival, the most important European comedy festival, conceived and directed by Ezio Greggio. The film tells the story of Big Wong who, together with his young son, is part of a tradition that is fading: the two travel and project Hollywood films for the inhabitants of small Chinese villages.But when the former wife of the protagonist calls for an increase in spousal obligations, Big Wong risks losing custody of his son. To be together, the two Wong move to the basement of an old Beijing cinema. One day Big Wong discovers a prototype DVD recorder for sale in a junk shop and decides to convince his son to join a new business: a real smuggling company for video. The business explodes but in the whirlwind of making money, Big Wong realizes that he could lose something more precious than custody: the trust of his son.
